Saratoga Springs is a short, scenic drive from the cottage. Home to many fine restaurants and shops Saratoga is also well known as a horse racing mecca.
The race course at Saratoga Springs is only 14 miles from our front door. A scenic drive through farm and ranch land and along the shore of Saratoga Lake. World class horse racing events are held here during the summer months.
The Saratoga Performing Arts Center is home to an acoustically ideal amphitheater, the Spa Little Theatre, the Charles R. Wood Gazebo Stage and The Jazz Bar — all nestled in an idyllic park setting surrounded by hiking trails, geysers and natural mineral springs.
Saratoga Spa State Park, distinguished by its classical architecture and listed as a National Historic Landmark, is noted for its diverse cultural, aesthetic and recreational resources.
The site of the turning point of the American Revolution in October of 1777. Memorial events to be stage here in the fall of 2027 on the 250th anniversary of the battle.
The National Historical Park visitor's center is the place to start your tour of this battlefield site that is large and best toured by car. The visitors center offers restrooms, a 20-minute visitor orientation film, 15-minute fiber-optic battlefield map, exhibits, the park's Eastern National museum store, and park maps and brochures.
Don't miss this interesting memorial to the hero of the Battle of Saratoga who went on to become a traitor a few miles down the Hudson at West Point. He is not named on the memorial, but all the clues are there. It is one of the more controversial memorials on the site.
Stand on the ground where the British General Burgoyne surrendered his army to General Gates in October of 1777. Walk a short distance away and you can see the site his army occupied prior to their surrender.
The Village of Stillwater was on this location long before the Battle of Saratoga was fought a few miles to the north. Many sites of historic importance are just steps away.
Built in 1927, in part with timbers from Revolutionary War era structures, the blockhouse is a reconstruction of early 18th century blockhouses of the region. Today, the Stillwater Blockhouse stands in a small park on a notably scenic section of the Hudson River. The blockhouse is dedicated to local history. Visitors can view the "loopholes" that allow shooting straight down on the enemy, cannon and exhibits that highlight life and conflict in the 18th century.
The Henry Knox Trail, also known as the Knox Cannon Trail, is a network of roads and paths that traces the route of Colonel Henry Knox's "noble train of artillery" from Crown Point, NY to the Continental Army camp outside Boston, Massachusetts early in the American Revolutionary War. The Knox Trail passes by our cottage on Rt. 4, better known here as Hudson Avenue. This marker is just a few steps south of our driveway.
The historic Champlain Canal trail passes directly in front of the cottage. Explore the historic but still functional locks that make up this stretch of the Hudson River between Troy and Fort Ann.
